SIKKIM ORNITHOLOGICAL SOCIETY (SOS)

Within an area of 7096 sq km, Sikkim is known to be home to over 450 species of birdlife - a remarkable record as yet unparalleled.  To preserve this rich avifaunal capital, SF initiated and founded the Sikkim Ornithological Society (SOS) which has now spun off to a self sustaining separate organization. SOS has plans to establish bird clubs in each school and develop the study of birds.  

Aims and Objectives of this Society:

To develop interest and enjoyment in the conservation of the birds of the region.

To liaise with existing regional, national and international bird organizations/ societies having similar aims and objectives for cooperation and information exchange.

To assist in the formation of local bird-watchers groups in all the four districts.

To produce regular publications like bulletins/newsletters/ journal containing matters of ornithological interest

To encourage observers to visit lesser known areas of the region, and search actively for globally threatened and near-threatened species.

To develop a  Conservation Fund for the conservation of birds of Sikkim Himalayan region

To develop a library of Ornithological information for the use of members to promote wider knowledge of birds including archiving of observations, studies and records of birds and their habitant.

To cooperate as occasion prompts, with agencies engaged in conservation and management of birds and private associations devoted to interests of bird conservation

To arouse through education, public recognition of the value of and need for protecting wild birds of the region.

To engage in such educational. scientific, literary, historical, philanthropic and charitable pursuits as may be part of aforementioned objectives

To contribute to ecotourism
